One of the best ways to grow and legitimize your business is with a domain name. Owning your domain name has many benefits, from giving you control to making it easier for people to locate your site. Additional benefits include protecting your domain copyrights and trademarks.
But First, What is a Domain Name?
To put it simply, a domain is what a user types into their browser in order to visit a specific site. For example, “dirigiblestudio.com” or “google.com”. An actual address for a site is a long, complicated string of numbers called an IP address. Enter a more user and human-friendly way to locate businesses and their sites—domain names. It might be helpful to think of a domain name as a street address and an IP address as map coordinates— both are for navigating to specific locations, but one is easier to utilize.
So How Do I Purchase a Domain?
After settling on a unique and apt domain name for your business, it is time to purchase it, or, more accurately, register it. To register your domain name, you will need to set up an account with one of the many accredited registrars (e.g., Name.com, GoDaddy, etc.). As expected, the process for each site varies, but in all cases, you’ll be asked to enter your domain name and provide your billing information.
At Dirigible, we use and recommend Name.com. You sign up here using our affiliate link. Dirigible may receive a commission if you use this link. We’ve also created a step-by-step guide on how to buy a domain.
After reviewing your entered domain information and clicking the “submit,” “purchase,” “buy,” or “OK” button, you will be the designated owner of that domain 🎉.
Pro Tip: Stay on Top of Your Domain Name Registration
It is important to note that registering a domain name does not make you its owner for life. When purchasing a domain name, you are rather a renter, and in order to remain the owner of that domain, you will have to renew after a set period of time. Make sure that you keep your info up to date at your registrar so you don’t accidentally lose your domain.
